Employees receive 100% of their salary from their employers for the first 16 days of sick leave. From day 17 till the end of week 52, sick leave is paid to eligible employees by social security and is capped at six times the base amount (99,858 NOK) of national insurance. There is no entitlement to sick leave payments after week 52. A doctor’s note is required as proof of sickness after the third day of illness.

Maternity leave

Mothers are entitled to 59 weeks of maternity leave at 80% of their salary, which is paid by national insurance. If they wish, mothers can choose instead to take a reduced maternity leave period of 49 weeks at 100% of their salary.

Paternity leave in Norway is two weeks unpaid. However, parents can choose to divide the maternity leave between the mother and father as they wish (although the period three weeks before birth and six weeks post-birth are exclusively for the mother).
